5 things to know about a Diesel Generator

We all have a plan but we still look for one more plan, called PLAN B; sometimes better known as the backup plan. No, nothing wrong in that, we human have this tendency to look for a backup almost for everything.  It’s like, “what if plan A doesn’t work?”

Similarly, in today’s time businesses can’t think of a day without electricity. Thanks to the advancement of the technology due to which we are able to receive uninterruptable power supply but uncertainties are never ruled out.

And here is when generators come to your rescue. We have seen many types of generators but today we will talk specifically of Diesel Generators.  We would take you to a 5-minute journey where we shall unfold some facts about Diesel Generators that each one of you should know before you zero-in on buying any generator.

1) Working efficiency level: The Diesel generators are much more efficient and consume less fuel as compared to petrol based generators to meet the same amount of power demand.

2) Toxic exhaust level: The exhaust levels are reasonably less in diesel generators than the petrol ones. A well-tuned diesel generator will discharge negligible toxic except during the change in power load.

3) After sales service & spares: The diesel generators are manufactured with simpler design & construction; such that it is easy to get it serviced by professionals. The spares for diesel gensets are indigenously manufactured and are easily available.

4) Total work hours: The diesel generators are designed such that it outlasts other generators when it comes to the total number of work hours. It lasts for thousands of hours before it requires an inspection or repair. So, you better be less worried about its work life cycle.

5) Silent/Quiet diesel generator: Gone are the days when diesel generators were known for the noise they used to make. New generation diesel generators are equipped with better technology and are silent while they operate.

We hope we were able to bust some of the popular myths about diesel generators. We at Supernova are Diesel generator manufacturers in India. We supply wide range of diesel gensets in India & overseas. We offer world-class silent DGs tuned for 75 dba noise levels in 7.5 – 2250kVA range. 6 Simple steps which will help you choose a generator

Selecting a generator can be a troublesome process, we at Supernova understand this and we present to you a simple six point guideline which will help you decide on the best genset suited for your power requirement.

1) Application - One of the prime factors while choosing a genset is the task that generator has to perform, which can be categorized in the following brackets:-
a.) Emergency Purpose (Standby)
b.) Prime Application (with continuous usage)
c.) Prime Application (with frequent outages)

The generator capacity would vary accordingly and so will be the price.
Hence selecting the generator according to its future usage would be a smart choice.

2) Determine the load that you want to run - To determine the best genset for your requirement, one of the most important factors is determining the type of load that you want to run.

Load can be categorized into the following:-

1. Resistive Load – The light bulb is an example of a resistive load and so are the appliances like toasters, coffee makers, stereos and TVs. Resistive loads can be termed as appliances which do not have an electric motor.

2. Reactive Load – A reactive load contains an electric motor. This type of load may require up to 3 times more power to start as much as it does to keep it running. Some examples of reactive load can be refrigerators, air conditioners, compressors etc.

3) Load calculation - You may wish to run 50 tube-lights or a few Air-conditioners & refrigerators but are you aware of the total wattages required to run the above-mentioned appliances?

In order to effectively choose a right genset, you need to first add up the total wattage your appliances would require and then you are good to move to the next step.

4) Type of operation - Do you want your generator to start off automatically when the power goes off? Or you want to start the generator manually in the absence of power?
Based on your requirement you can select the type of generator you want and this also becomes one of the most important criteria in selection of the right genset.

5) Life of engine - The life of engine plays an important role and depends a lot on the operating condition in which the Genset has to operate. So, a careful analysis about the usage of Genset needs to be done before making any decision.

6) Fuel consumption - Suppose you require a 55 kVA generator but since a generator isn't available of exact range, so you would end up either with a 50 kVA or a 62.5 kVA generator. But here's the catch, in case you go for a lower kVA generator (i.e 50kVA),the fuel consumption would be more as the generator would be running on a full load.
And in case if you go for 62.5 kVA then certainly the generator would run at 80% of the total capacity, hence the fuel consumption would be reasonably low.
So it is always advisable to buy a generator with is a little higher range than your requirement.
